The Black Cockatoo Gallery
About the Black Cockatoo Gallery
Situated within one of the most pristine environments on Earth, the Black Cockatoo Gallery occupies 25 lush acres of the Bloomfield region of Far North Queensland. Situated on the Bloomfield Track, just north of Wujal Wujal, the gallery displays works from local artists who hold a passion for the environment, in addition to a permanent exhibition of the artworks by painter and gallery owner, Ross Franzi.
Having been inspired by the majestic beauty and the unique ecosystem of the Bloomfield region, Ross moved to this area in Far North Queensland in 2000. Since then, he has dedicated himself to developing a wildlife art gallery and tea house that showcases the unique talents of local and invited artists, while enabling visitors to experience the natural beauty and unspoilt landscape that is the Bloomfield paradise.
Careful planning of the gallery environment and the introduction of native vegetation and water to the property has encouraged endemic wildlife to return to the property and thrive. A huge variety of native birds, frogs, lizards, wallabies, and rare and endangered animals are regular visitors to the gallery grounds. Now the area is a wildlife refuge to help sick and injured animals.
Gallery patrons are encouraged to stay and refresh while enjoying the surrounding bushland — meet Henry, the gallery’s resident black cockatoo. The gallery deck overlooks the property and is perfect for coffee and a snack.
Black Cockatoo Gallery: Origin of the Name
When Ross Franzi purchased the property, a large amount of the area was cleared, and right up where the gallery is situated now stands three large bloodwood trees. In these trees can be seen the spectacular sight of hundreds of black cockatoos, males and females. These birds come back every year, just like the Gallery's guests.
“Art with a difference”
With an emphasis on promoting local artists who have a passion for the environment, the Black Cockatoo Gallery is fast gaining a reputation as one of the leading art destinations in the North Queensland region.
The gallery’s collection continues to develop with recent works including captivating recycled metal sculptures from a small South African village, which helps not just the environment but wildlife too. Come and see us to find out how.
